The Witcher 4 Where Things Stand: 2028 Window, 500-Plus Developers and a Remaster in Between
CD Projekt's first-half results put the next Witcher in full production, still aimed at 2028, with two Witcher 3 releases to bridge the gap.
CD Projekt Red used its first-half 2026 results on September 2 to lay out the road ahead, and the headline for Witcher fans has not changed: The Witcher 4 is still targeting 2028. There is no exact date, and none should be assumed.
The window. The company’s own results release describes “a planned release window for The Witcher 4 in 2028.” Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski repeated it in a short video ahead of gamescom 2026, saying “the Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window,” and asking fans to let the team work because the game will be “worth the wait,” as reported by PCGamesN.
Where development stands. During the H1 earnings call, per an Investing.com transcript, management described The Witcher 4 as being in full production, with technical testing already running across all target platforms. The transcript has the company calling it “the biggest, boldest, and most ambitious projects in our history so far,” and puts the number of developers assigned at 519.
Ciri takes the lead. CDPR’s release confirms the story hook players already know: after Geralt’s return in new Witcher 3 content, Ciri “takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4.”
The bridge releases. Two Witcher 3 projects fill the wait:
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered launches September 29, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and, for the first time, natively on Nintendo Switch 2. Both expansions are included at no extra cost.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past, developed with Fool’s Theory, is slated for 2027. A gameplay trailer debuted at gamescom Opening Night Live.
The bigger plan. CDPR has previously said The Witcher 4 kicks off a new trilogy, with all three games planned inside a six-year window.
Bottom line. Nothing announced this month moves the goalposts. The Witcher 4 is deep in production, the team is large, and the public target is 2028. Anything more specific, including a firm date or a final platform list, remains unannounced.
