GTA 6's 13-Year Wait, Compared to Rockstar's Last Gap
GTA 5 came out in 2013. GTA 6 arrives in 2026. Here's how that gap stacks up against Rockstar's own history.
Grand Theft Auto V released in 2013. Grand Theft Auto VI releases November 19, 2026. Do the math, and that’s roughly thirteen years separating the two mainline entries in Rockstar’s flagship series — an extraordinarily long gap, even for a studio already known for unhurried development.
Context helps here. Rockstar’s other major open-world release in that stretch, Red Dead Redemption 2, arrived in 2018, about five years after GTA 5. That gap already felt substantial at the time, especially for players used to more frequent entries from other publishers. But it’s dwarfed by the roughly thirteen-year distance between GTA 5 and GTA 6 — more than double the wait between GTA 5 and Red Dead 2.
What could explain a gap that much larger? It’s likely some combination of factors rather than one single cause: the sheer scope of what a modern open-world game is expected to deliver has grown enormously since 2013, hardware transitions across two console generations complicate development timelines, and Rockstar’s own stated commitment to polish — repeated through two separate GTA 6 delays — suggests a studio unwilling to compromise its standards even as the calendar stretches further than anyone anticipated.
Whether that patience will read as worth it is a question only the finished game can answer. But by any measure, GTA 6 is arriving into a gaming landscape that has changed enormously since GTA 5’s release. Thirteen years is a long time by any studio’s standard, let alone Rockstar’s own comparatively brisk five-year turnaround on Red Dead Redemption 2.
