GTA Online, Over a Decade Later, Is Still Getting Weekly Updates
GTA Online launched alongside GTA 5 back in 2013 and, more than ten years on, is still receiving regular content — even as GTA 6 approaches.
It’s easy to forget just how long GTA Online has been running. The mode launched in 2013 alongside GTA 5, originally positioned as an online companion to a single-player game — and more than a decade later, it’s still receiving regular weekly and monthly content updates, a lifespan few games in the industry can match.
That longevity is worth appreciating on its own terms. Plenty of live-service games come and go within a fraction of that time span, either shutting down support entirely or fading into maintenance mode with sporadic updates at best. GTA Online, by contrast, has kept a consistent weekly cadence going for years: rotating bonuses, new vehicles, discounts, events, and giveaways arriving on a schedule players can set their watch to.
Part of what’s remarkable is that this cadence hasn’t meaningfully changed even as anticipation for GTA 6 has built. With GTA 6 now set to release November 19, 2026, on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S, there was always a reasonable question of when — or whether — Rockstar might start pulling back on GTA Online support to shift focus. So far, that hasn’t visibly happened.
Whatever comes next for the franchise, GTA Online’s run stands as one of the more durable examples of a live-service game sustaining itself for over a decade without losing its update rhythm. Ten-plus years in, it’s still shipping new content on a weekly basis — a track record that will inevitably be compared against whatever online systems GTA 6 eventually brings with it.
