To be clear from the start: HotGameNews staff have not played Resident Evil Requiem. This is a roundup of published reviews and aggregate scores, not our own hands-on review.

The scores. Resident Evil Requiem, released February 27, 2026, holds a Metascore of 89 (“Generally Favorable”) from 135 critic reviews on Metacritic. That is 131 positive reviews, 4 mixed and none negative. Metacritic’s midyear list of 2026’s best-reviewed games has it fifth. OpenCritic also lists it at 89. Players are even happier: the user score is 9.3 out of 10 (“Universal Acclaim”) across nearly 16,000 ratings, with 93 percent positive.

What critics love. The recurring theme is that Requiem draws on the entire history of the series. CoverGeek scored it 100 and called it “a greatest hits mix of the finest bits of design, storytelling and pure terror” from the franchise’s 30-year history, praising how it balances its dual protagonists, Grace and Leon. Gaming Boulevard gave it 95, describing it as “the new blueprint for what survival horror should be,” and singled out the balance between horror-driven exploration and action-focused play.

The criticism. The negatives are relatively mild and mostly concern the second half of that dual structure. Metacritic’s summary notes some reviewers took issue with how the Leon campaign is executed and with a reliance on established franchise tropes, plus concerns about environmental design consistency between the two protagonists’ storylines. With only 4 mixed reviews out of 135, those are minority views.

Why it matters. Capcom has a strong year in these charts. Both Requiem (89) and the newer Pragmata (85) appear in Metacritic’s first-half top 20, and TheGamer has cited the two together as evidence of the publisher’s momentum.

The bottom line. With no negative reviews and a user score above 9, Resident Evil Requiem is one of the most broadly liked big-budget games of 2026. Critics say it honors the series’ past without feeling trapped by it, and the biggest debate is which of the two campaigns is stronger.
