A quick disclosure: HotGameNews staff have not played Pokémon Pokopia. This is a roundup of published reviews and aggregate scores, not our own hands-on verdict.

The scores. Pokémon Pokopia, a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive developed by Omega Force and published by Nintendo, launched March 5, 2026 and holds a Metascore of 89 (“Generally Favorable”) from 116 critic reviews. That is 112 positive reviews, 4 mixed and zero negative, a 97 percent positive rate. Metacritic’s midyear list of 2026’s best-reviewed games ranks it fourth. Players agree: the user score is 8.6 out of 10 across 1,818 ratings, with 86 percent positive.

What critics love. Metacritic’s summary calls it a standout Pokémon spin-off that combines building mechanics with creature collection. Siliconera said the game “invites us to discover, explore, rebuild, and reconnect, rewarding us for every action along way.” Edge Magazine highlighted its breadth of appeal, writing that it “caters equally to all kinds of player: those who love to build freely, and those who crave more direction.”

The complaint. The measured dissent is about structure. TheGamer observed that “there is a fun time to be had here,” but said the building quests can feel “mostly rigid and repetitive.” Among players, the more critical reviews on Metacritic fault the time-management and inventory systems as tedious during long sessions. Those are the exceptions, though. Some users report enormous playtime, one writing that they were “420 hours in and the game keeps on giving.”

Why it matters. Spin-offs are often a gamble for the Pokémon brand, and this one shows up near the top of the 2026 charts alongside much bigger-budget games. Its 89 ties Resident Evil Requiem on Metacritic’s midyear list, a notable result for a cozy, creature-collecting building game.

The bottom line. Critics say Pokopia works for both freeform builders and players who want more direction, and hardly anyone rates it poorly. If you were waiting to see whether the Switch 2 has a must-play Pokémon game, the review scores say yes, with the caveat that the quest structure may wear on players who want full creative freedom.
