Review Roundup: Control Resonant — What Critics Are Saying
Remedy's new Control game launched this week to strong but divided reviews. Here is what critics are saying so far.
First, the important disclaimer: HotGameNews staff have not played Control Resonant. This is a roundup of published reviews and aggregate scores, not our own hands-on review. The game only launched September 24, 2026, so scores may still move.
The scores. Remedy Entertainment’s Control Resonant holds a Metascore of 83 (“Generally Favorable”) from 72 critic reviews on Metacritic. That is 90 percent positive (65 reviews), 8 percent mixed (6 reviews) and 1 percent negative (1 review). By platform, PC and PlayStation 5 both stand at 83, and Xbox Series X at 81. OpenCritic’s listing for the game shows a slightly higher 84. Players are enthusiastic so far, with an 8.9 user score from 463 ratings, 87 percent of them positive.
What critics love. The strongest praise is about atmosphere and design. Radio Times gave it a perfect 100, highlighting Remedy’s ability to capture “that feeling of the new and awe-inspiring.” Slant Magazine scored it 90, noting how the game “maps its protagonist’s inner life onto his movement through the game’s open world.” Metacritic’s user summary adds that players are praising the combat fluidity and level design.
The dissent. The sharpest criticism on Metacritic’s page comes from ComicBook, which gave it 40 and argued the melee combat is “bafflingly hollow, relentlessly repetitive, and poorly balanced,” calling the game “a disappointing sequel” that betrays Remedy’s strengths. It is a striking outlier against the rest of the field, but it does echo a concern seen in player feedback: that the game’s lack of hand-holding can make navigation difficult for some.
How to read it. With only days of reviews in the books, an 83 is a good start rather than a final verdict. The spread here is wide, from 100 at the top to 40 at the bottom, which usually signals a game that does something distinctive that not every critic connects with. The bulk of critics sit in the positive column.
The bottom line. Critics broadly say Control Resonant delivers Remedy’s signature strangeness and sense of awe, with combat as the most contested piece. If the sequel’s melee is your top concern, read a few of the individual reviews before deciding.
Scores reflect Metacritic and OpenCritic at time of writing and are likely to shift in the coming weeks.
